Well said.
Misinformation and sensationalizing cultural differences is a common practice and is to discouraged. I find it distasteful that writers of subcontinental origin who have gone on to win literary prizes, capitalize on the west’s fascination with exotica. They pander to a misinformed audience. I find their books shallow and characters paper cutouts. I won’t name names but you get what I mean!!!
Sitara’s story empowers Pakistani woman. First AND second wives both. And others. Her resilience, resolve, ingenuity and courage ( it’s no mean feat to stand up to mullah types) are an inspiration.
I’m disappointed that a promising young writer has experimented with sensational ism. But it’s a growth curve!
