…ot do a very good job of dealing with its old racial and ethnic and cultural hatred and prejudices. White Americans may have smiled at their Black and Latino and Muslim and Jewish neighbours — but the moment they had a chance, they turned on them viciously, just as they always had. The old attitude of white supremacy had never gone anywhere in America. All that Trump did, really, was to license it, encourage it, normalize it.

Very true.
All those patronizing smiles? I suffered them for decades, thinking my white ‘Friends’ were the height of enlightenment. That was my residual colonized mentality. White sahibs and memsahibs. My romance with america was long over before Trump happened. Only I didn’t know it. I know now I don’t belong in this version of America. But I ain’t goin nowhere, those of you who are about to tell me to leave. We WILL make America what it can become — or should’ve, could’ve been — the democracy which we dreamed of.
