Take Flight in Dazzled Air!

“Apollo’s Chariot” by Odilon Redon

Guilty!

I admit

I have been a coward;

I surrendered

When was it that I allowed

Wonder to hibernate?

Dance to flee?

Embarrassed arabesques tiptoed away…

Perched on a pink cloud

amorous once,

Song eyes me still, reproachfully

Coward!

Agree or not

Healing is a pretty lie.

Losses and wrongs

those allocations of pain,

mortifications of self-harm

jabs and stabs

weaponised words,

cannot scab.

They fester —

they fester a little

or fester a lot.

But they fester.

Swaddle and coddle,

salve or soak,

these living signatures of loss and grief?

They breathe, mark us

surely as a chrome flash,

a milky feather
