“Normal” to too many people in America means a deeply fearful life, without consciously being aware of the roots of that fear. Capitalism holds us hostage, to use a useless phrase.
I know what I fear living here, since I’m from another country. I fear credit bureaus. Medical bills. Gun violence. Police violence. I fear what my color and religion will evoke in a white person, even the white plumber who squats to fix a clogged kitchen sink. I am rich in terms of $$$s but threadbare when it comes to physical, emotional and environmental security. It’s a long list.
