Let’s not forget that poverty and stagnation were used by us to cultivate and groom a force of angry people- the Taliban, to fight Soviets in Afghanistan. Back then they were hailed as ‘freedom fighters’ battling communism. Of course it all went to hell pretty quickly. Aid was pumped into Pakistan, US tax $$s, to prop up a brutal army dictatorship and provide ‘technical support’ to the Taliban.

It wasn’t long before hordes of disgruntled Pakistani youth joined the ‘jihad’ and murder and mayhem became the norm. America hastily disavowed taliban. Afghanistan and Pakistan were further pushed into chaos.

How often have we propped up dictatorships, created forces of destruction, that have eroded and destroyed so called democracy, in many regions?
