It’s not trivialization. This is how it all begins…
One of my favorite German writers is Irene Nemirovsky. Young and famous, fêted by German elites. She was Jewish. When persecution began, her non Jewish colleagues and friends made her feel safe. Soon no one would publish her work. As the horrors multiplied, she continued to be complacent. To the very last.
She stayed on in Germany even as she saw droves of Jewish Germans depart. Then came the dreaded men in black. She perished in Bergen-Belsen if I’m not mistaken.
Dreadful.
My point is, no one is trivializing what happened to German and European Jews and those who Nazis saw as unfit.
It creeps up on you, the horror. Small beginnings end in massive tragedies with repercussions that span generations.
As no doubt is happening to Palestinians. Except in their case it all unfolded overnight.
